2-12-11 Mickey Mouse Club House Birthday Cake

My co-worker Sally was planning a Mickey Mouse Club House themed party for her daughter's 2nd birthday and she asked me to make the cake. She researched some images and bought the candles and figurines for the top and left the rest to me.

The bottom layer is yellow cake and the top is chocolate.  Both layers are filled and frosted with buttercream icing and then covered in fondant.

I love to work with fondant!  It's like edible clay/play-doh.  You can sculp just about anything out of it.  It's a little bit time consuming rolling out, cutting and sculpting but it's pretty easy to work with.  Unfortunately it's a lot more expensive so I don't get to do it that often.

I also make yellow and chocolate cuppcakes!  Iced with buttercream and decorated with sprinkles and fondant Mickey Mouses!

12-11-10 Laura's 2nd 29th Chicago Bear's Birthday Cake

So Laura's husband Brett decided to throw a surprise party for her 30th 2nd 29th birthday.  In trying to decide how to decorate the cake and what kind of decorations to have for the party a Chicago Bear's theme was decided upon.  I was a little nervous that she might not like it, but she loved it!

Another color flow icing creation.  The Chicago Bears logos and lettering are all handmade from color flow icing....I LOVE THE STUFF!!!!  The possibilities really are endless!

The cake itself is carrot cake with cream cheese icing...the icing didn't quite cooperate with me but it turned out ok anyway.

11-13-10 - Auburn University Birthday Cake

A co-worker went all over town trying to find a bakery that would make an Auburn University cake for her husband's birthday and she couldn't find anyone to do it.  She was talking to another co-worker who suggested that she ask me - they had both seen the retirement cake I had done for Marianne.  It was short notice but thanks to have the day off for Veteran's Day I was able to pull it off.

The cake is yellow iced with buttercream and decorated with hand made color flow icing decorations that I made!

10-10-10 - Joey Maggioni's Baptism

Joey's mom saw the pictures of the cake that I did for Max's Baptism and she wasnted one, too!  Chocolate cake with buttercream icing, royal icing flowers, and pewter cross.

9-20-10 - Stephen and Charlene's Baby Shower

Another Stork fo another co-worker - this time for a boy.

Cake was chocolate and cupcakes were vanilla.

8/27/10 - Marianne's Retirement Cake

After 17 years our Immunization Coordinator for the Coastal Health District, Marianne Pappas, retired.  I was asked to make the cake for the party.  I started with this t-shirt - one that Marianne had gotten made many years ago.

I made a photo copy of the t-shirt and used it to trace the images of the shirt using Color Flow Icing.  The only time I have ever used the icing was when I took the Wilton Method cake decorating classes over 2 years ago.  It's similar to Royal Icing in that you let it harden and then you have sugary decorations that you can place on the cake.  You start with a thick consistency of the icing, place a piece of wax paper over the picture, and then trace the images.  Then you thin out the icing and fill in the designs.  It takes some pre-planning because the icing takes quite a while to dry, but I feel the wait is worth it!

The base cake is a 12" x 18" sheet cake - marble cake - iced with buttercream ising.  The duck is vanilla cake made using 1/2 of the 3-D Duck pan from Wilton, and iced withbuttercream icing.  The "Be Wise Immunize" design is made entirely out of color flow icing.  The words and balloon strings were made using one photo copy of the t-shirt placed on a cardboard cake board with a piece of wax paper over it.  The people and the balloons were made using a second photo copy of the shirt.  Once all of the pieces dried they were peeled off of the wax paper and placed on the cake.

The possibilities with Color Flow icing are endless...your business'es logo, a picture from a coloring book, an original design...pretty much anything is possible!

7/25/2010 - Max's Baptism cake

I was honored to be chosen by good friends Laura and Brett to be their son Max's Godmother.

Of course I offered to make the cake!  It was a simple vanilla cake with buttercream icing decorated with royal icing flowers and a keepsake pewter cross.  I forgot how much I love working with Royal Icing....hadn't had a chance to make any flowers in over two years until this cake.

Lesson's learned from this cake:

When working with box cake mixes, stick to Duncan Hines...don't settle for any else!
